As an addition to my triangle bean bag post I thought I’d write a quick tutorial on how I did my circle bag. Since I’m pretty new to sewing and was making an attempt to figure a few things out on my own I have no doubt that some people may have different ways of doing some things, but this is what worked for me this time around. The overall construction is pretty similar to that of my triangle bag so I won’t get into that here. I started by tracing a circle onto the back of my fabric using a pencil and a lid to a container. (I’ve found there is no shortage of circular items of all sizes sitting around the house available to be traced.) For the inner bag just pin the pieces of fabric together and sew along this line, leaving a space open for turning. The outer bag … Continue reading →

Just under a year ago I got the idea in my head that I wanted to try to be a runner. I’d like to say it came from a loftier place but really the idea was born after finding out Walt Disney World holds marathons. Really cool, themed out, everyone dresses up marathons. I started training last fall. I pushed myself and was doing pretty well. I even did two 5k races. Right after the second race I learned a really important lesson, when something hurts, STOP. I had, of course, decided to push through the pain thinking I was tough enough to deal with it. This was a bad plan. That plan resulted in a broken ankle. Broken ankles are not fun. So now that I’m long healed from that situation I’ve decided to try again. This time I’m using the Jeff Galloway walk/run method. For just over two weeks … Continue reading →

My good friend Kate recently had a baby and I thought I’d share a couple of things that I made for her. First is the Spiral Baby Blanket. I found the pattern here and really loved how unique it is. Brian has made numerous requests that I make another one for us because he thinks it’s so cool. The pattern is so fun and easy that I just might! Since Kate’s nursery theme is giraffes I also made a little giraffe rattle. I found the pattern on Pinterest, but here is a direct link. I used blue and green flannel fabric and some soft blue and green ribbon for the mane. The tail is rick rack and adds a little texture. I repurposed a small rattle from another toy and viola, cute giraffe rattle. I fell so in love with this soft, little giraffe that I became a little worried I … Continue reading →

Check out my most recent discovery, Phat Fiber. Phat Fiber is a mystery box of fancy yarns and yarn goodies. Here’s the deal as far as I can tell so far. Phat Fiber picks a theme for each month. Then their contributors send in samples that go along with that theme. These could be handspun yarn, handpainted yarn, handpainted roving, stitch markers, etc. Basically if someone who works with yarn might love it, it might be sent in. Then Phat Fiber divides these samples into individual boxes that fall into one of three categories. Fluff, for people who love roving. Stitches, for people who love yarn. And Mixed, for people who love it all! Then, once a month, at a time and day that is released by email a few days prior, the boxes go on sale. They call it a box drop. Luckily there are two drops on sale day because these things … Continue reading →

I’ve recently started teaching knitting and crocheting classes at the local Joann Fabrics craft store. It’s a great fit since I love teaching and crafting. The one main downfall is doing this job requires me to frequently enter the store, and that typically ends up costing me money. I’ve only taught 2 classes so far and was very proud of myself to have left empty-handed both times. Today, however, was a completely different story. I only went in to drop of some samples for upcoming classes initially. Then I decided to see if a fabric I’ve been wanting is on sale (it was), then I decided to check out the remnants (uh-oh). This is what I ended up leaving the store with. In case you were wondering exactly what’s there, here’s a breakdown. 11 fleece remnants (ranging from about .5/yard to 1.4/yards), 2 minky dot remnants, 6 assorted cotton pattern remnants, 4 fleece … Continue reading →

Now that Father’s Day has come I can finally show all of you the project I’ve been working on for my husband. I’ve been dying to show it off, but since my husband reads the blog I’ve had to keep it a secret. Until today! Brian loves being a dad more than anything in the world and has accumulated a small collection of mementos from special times with our boys. I thought it would be a great idea if for Father’s Day we made him a Dad Box. One place to keep all those special things safe, organized, and easily accessible. I shared the idea with my oldest and he loved it so we got to work. The entire project was a total collaboration between the two of us and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out! First we bought a medium sized wooden box from a craft store and … Continue reading →

So although I promised a lot more posts it appears I didn’t quite deliver. It turns out I had enough energy to accomplish some tasks, just not enough to write about them. I thought I’d quickly share one of the things I managed to get done over the past few weeks, the deck. Our back deck was grimy and disgusting. It certainly hadn’t been cleaned since my husband bought the house, and my guess would be the previous owners hadn’t done it either. A year ago I bought a deck cleaner solution and application spray thingy (yes, I said a year, and yes, I believe the technical term is thingy) with the best of intentions and then stored them in the garage. For a year. Here are some pictures to give you an idea of what the deck looked like. unfortunately I took these as a last minute thought right before I … Continue reading →

Due to a myriad of emotional events in both my, and some very close friends’, lives combined with some nasty medication side effect drama I have not only not been posting here, but have barely been present in my own life. I’m hoping that I can turn it all around starting this weekend. I finally have the energy to relax. (If that makes any sense at all) You see, when I’m exhausted I don’t get much done, but I don’t enjoy my down time. Although today I have a list of things that need to get accomplished that’s a mile long, I gave myself permission to do almost none of it. Instead I spent most of the day in my craft room learning to quilt, and I must say, this is the best I’ve felt in months! Crafting is very therapeutic for me. It centers me in a way nothing else does. So in … Continue reading →

Shortly after developing my newfound love of Pinterest I discovered a deep love for my sewing machine as well. I’m just amazed that what starts as stray fabric and thread can be transformed into useful (and cute!) items in a short period of time. After making a couple of purse-type bags I dug up the courage to try something new without using a tutorial. My younger son has some developmental delays and is about to begin early intervention therapy. His delays are thankfully not very extreme but one of the concerns is his low muscle tone. Since his hands are one of the problem areas I thought he might benefit from some bean bags. He likes to pick things up and investigate them very closely so I thought maybe if he had some bean bags that had different textures inside of them he would be interested enough in them to squish them … Continue reading →

So I’ve had a Pinterest account for months. I even had one back when you still had to be “invited” to join. I’d heard all the hype and people talking about spending hours at a time on the site and honestly, I didn’t get it. At. All. Over the months I’d tried it out a few times, but I still couldn’t imagine spending more than about 5 minutes browsing the site and even at that, it seemed like I’d never be on there enough to ever remember to do any of the things I’d “pinned”. About a week ago that all changed. I was still hyped up from the organization I had accomplished in the basement but WAY too tired to actually get up and physically get anything done. I figured it was as good a time as any to try to figure out Pinterest. I decided to go in and organize my boards (I still had a … Continue reading →
